Abstract
Prevalence and containment of infectious diseases are linked to poor environmental and hand sanitation. This study investigated students’ level of awareness and practice of hand sanitation in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Through the multi-stage, stratified and systematic random sampling methods, 620 students were selected. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered using questionnaire, focus group guide, documents and observation guide. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was employed to analyse the data generated through the questionnaire. However, qualitative data derived through focus group were analysed based on research themes. The study established that 97% of the respondents are aware of the need for proper hand sanitation; the interpersonal sources of information were dominant, as opposed to the traditional or social media sources. Based on the correlation coefficient (r = 0.2564; t-stat. = 6.579) with the p-value of 0.0000, the study found that there is a positive significant relationship between exposure to campaign messages and hand sanitation among the study group. It recommended the need to engage traditional and new media to complement interpersonal sources of information to enhance proper hand sanitation among students in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria.
