Abstract
Cultural imperialism is the bane of African culture. This work critically reviews television broadcasting in Nigeria and its role in the dissemination of Western culture. The study is anchored on Cultural Imperialism theory and it acknowledges television as a powerful medium. The paper observes that the activities of television channels in Nigeria are influenced by Western culture through programming, it showcases showcasing Western cultural practices such as dressing, eating, language and other materialistic tendencies. It is also observed that television stations in Nigeria promote indigenous cultural practices though programmes and other offerings. It is therefore recommended that all stakeholders, including government agencies, should work towards reversing the trend of overwhelming Western dominance by creating a healthy environment for the cultures to interact positively with each other.
