Abstract
Mobilization of mass audience has become more effective in this age of computer- mediated communication as a result of the use of social media. That is why social media are employed to enlist youths' participation in various actions. Popularity of social media among Nigerian youths is not in doubt. Its effectiveness was clearly demonstrated during the 'occupy Nigeria protests' popularly known as '2012 Fuel Subsidy Removal Protests'. This paper considers this event and through the survey method investigates the use of social media in mobilizing Nigerian youths during the protests. University of Ibadan formed the population of the study. The study shows that the conventional media are playing lesser role in informing the younger generation. It is therefore recommended that the potentials of the new media be employed to enlist the youths for active participation in the developmental process. Activists are encouraged to adopt social media platforms in carrying out their activities (in execution of their mandate).
